Educational

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes had never been offered at Millstone Apartments until our observant Activity Coordinator saw a need and knew how to meet it. Inspired by Isabel C., the property’s housekeeper, and with the help of the property manager, we implemented a series of evening classes to afford this opportunity to as many adult residents as possible.

Three women—Lydia D., a single mother, Marta P., a grandmother from Colombia, and Isabel—took full advantage of this exciting opportunity. At first, teaching the class was difficult as each woman had a different level of familiarity with the language. Marta could carry on basic conversations in English, while Lydia did not comprehend English at all. The goal became finding a middle ground at which all would benefit from the class.

Our inventive Activity Coordinator quickly assessed the talent and ability of each and designed a specific program to meet all their needs. She incorporated themes and subjects that taught practical conversation exchanges similar to what might be encountered on a daily basis. She supplemented instruction time with a monthly movie night to fine-tune listening and comprehension skills.

The most remarkable aspect of this story is the genuine enthusiasm shown by each resident as their familiarity with English increased and positive changes occurred. In addition to the following tangible effects, Isabel, Lydia and Marta strengthened their interpersonal skills in an encouraging environment.

  • Lydia was offered a part-time job at a retail establishment as a result of her newly acquired fluency in English.
  • Isabel took and passed her required OSHA safety test in English with flying colors.
  • During "Backwards Day" at Millstone Apartments, when the leasing staff switched places with the maintenance staff, Isabel rented two apartments to prospective residents in English, resulting in her being considered for a position as a leasing agent!
